The Four Graces

Several times I have tried to paint the three Graces, but I did not succeed. Only when I realised that the Graces are enormous, that they need space, and that each one requires her own canvas, did the project develop.

Throughout the history of art, the three Graces have always appeared together. The myth tells that they are daughters of Zeus. They are painted countless times. They have been carved out of marble blocks and polished with utmost care. The three Graces always turn towards each other. A narcissistic sister colony. They hold each other’s hands. They admire each other.

The three Graces have always excluded the fourth. At least we have never heard about the fourth. But I decided to paint her also. And on an equally large canvas as the other three.

I have painted the Graces as outgoing. The fourth is more abashed, but it is also the first time she appears. Whether they are graceful and beautiful, others may decide. I have tried to put the mythological aside. And so has the four Graces.
